Should Shonn Stay or Should Shonn Go Now?

I’d like to see The Clash re-vamp their song to that just once.  That would be an entertaining mountain of sh-sh-sh-sh’s.  At least I think it’d be entertaining.

The title is the big question.  Should Shonn Greene come back for his senior season at Iowa, or should he leave “early” and turn pro.  Let’s suppose a couple of things from the start:

-Shonn gets his 100+ yards on the ground against Minnesota
-Iowa gets an Outback Bowl bid

Now, the arguments, beginning with why he should return next year:

-He gets to go after college football history, the Heisman Trophy.  He would be the odds-on favorite to win it from day one.
-Iowa would likely be ranked all season.  More national TV, more name recognition, bigger first contract down the road.
-He could continue to refine his game, making him a better all-around threat (and more appealing to NFL teams who may question his abilities to take his talent to the next level.
-With so many great QBs in this year’s draft class, he won’t be as high on teams’ draft boards if he left this season.

Now, why he should leave after this, his junior season:

-His stock may never be higher.  If he doesn’t win the Doak Walker Award (best running back), it will be an absolute crime.  He’ll be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Awards for player of the year (though he won’t win, thanks to the bevy of Big 12 QBs).
-His stock will never be higher.  Coming back for his senior season just to take a shot at the Heisman Trophy is a long shot.  No one has won it back to back since Archie Griffin in the 70’s.  It’s too slim of a chance.
-He could get hurt and ruin his shot at NFL riches after next season.
-Next year, there may be another “Shonn Greene,” a back that comes from nowhere to steal the spotlight, thereby hurting his draft stock.
-He’s really not leaving early.  At age 23, he’s pretty old for a college junior, thanks to trips to a Prep School out of High School and a stint at Kirkwood when he didn’t keep his grades up in Iowa City.  A 25 year old rookie doesn’t sound good to NFL scouts — there would be a lot of questions about his mileage.
-He’s likely the first running back drafted.  That’s not guaranteed next year.  He gives up the chance to make himself a top 3 back in exchange for being a top 15 pick.  That’s still plenty of cash, especially for a guy who was working moving furniture in Cedar Rapids when he didn’t make the grade at Iowa.

I personally think he should (and will) leave after this year.  But I’d love to hear what you have to say.

Have a good one!

  1. I think the question unanswered to date is the status of Greene’s academic eligibility for another year? Perhaps there is no choice to be made. I have not heard much from the coaches regarding his progress this semester after returning to Iowa from Kirkwood. At age 23, is there progress toward a declared major? On a more pressing note, would he definitely be eligible for a January bowl?

  2. He should go, but man would it be nice if he could come back and with our schedule next year… I am thinking Rose Bowl or maybe better! The risk is too big with football and injuries. Also the age factor comes into play. It’s also obvious he isn’t too fond of school. Always the risk of another person that could steal the spotlight.

Like the guy, thrilled he’s a Hawk and hope to keep him for one more year, but wouldn’t blame him if he goes.

  4. Would love to see Shonn stick around another year for the Hawks but he should probably go pro while his stocks are as high as they are. Jewell Hampton ran very good this year for them as well. I look forward to him having a very good season next year. Good luck to Shonn and the Hawkeyes regardless of the decision that is made.
